Learn about the Zero Waste Project
Hello! I am Gaby Baeza and I live in Mexico City and since May 2016 my family and I have been pursuing the goal of "Zero Waste"
I have to confess that when I heard the term "Zero Waste" I thought it was something utopian: garbage is everywhere. It is something natural.
So when I started this project and convinced my family to join, everyone (including me) thought it would be simply impossible. It's been two years now and this movement has become a part of my life that brings me a lot of satisfaction and excitement.
Since I started this project, my view of garbage (and especially of industrial processes) has changed a lot: Why does everything have to be packaged? Why do we have to change cell phones/cars/shoes just because fashion dictates it? Where does the kilo and a half of garbage that we chilangos produce every day go? Why do they always give you a plastic bag?
I discovered that there are alternatives, and above all that the problem of garbage is not in the garbage. The problem of garbage begins much earlier, with our way of consuming. We are immersed in a false idea that has been sold to us, including the idea that by buying more and more we will be happier, and that this is the only way.
Thanks to the Zero Waste movement, I now live much happier, since I know that I am doing my part to be the change I want to see in the world.
A little more about me
I have always been very interested in protecting the environment. My parents were very ecologists and that was a key point in awakening in me the concern to take care of the planet. I studied Environmental Sciences and a Master's degree in Sustainable Development in Germany. I love environmental education and have given workshops in schools in Austria, Serbia and Croatia.
I believe that these experiences were key to understanding that the environmental problem must be solved urgently, and that this problem is linked to a form of global social inequality. I have realized that unless we, the citizens, begin to take action in the matter of protecting our planet, things will not improve. I have the idea that we must stop waiting for solutions to come from outside, and begin to change the world, starting with ourselves.
Zero Waste Project represents my passion for documenting my journey towards a more conscious, zero-waste life. Join this movement and adopt this lifestyle. I promise you it's not that difficult and will bring many benefits to you and our planet.
